Are you using hashtags to expand your reach?

What's with all the hashtags? Seems spammy, right? Well, yes it does but what you see above, you can see the most popular hashtags used in digital marketing. You should be using hashtags whenever your post on social media. Why? Social media has evolved in such a way that social media platforms need a more efficient way of sorting what information is out there and how to sort the information more effectively so that it is relevant to internet users (your customers or followers).

Simply put, incorporating #hashtags into your social media content, you can expand your reach and increase your audience.

Using hashtags is a great way of labelling content and helping users to find social media updates. Your content becomes more discoverable, and it allows users to find relevant content from your business as well as others. Yes, your competitors will be using hashtags too!

The hashtag allows internet users to connect with and engage other social media users based on a common theme or interest. Thus, you can imaging a hashtag as a fishing net and you are throwing this over the entire amount of fish (users) that are swimming in the big ocean of what is, your industry, product, or service and essentially, you want to catch them.

Indeed, hashtags help you to increase engagement on Twitter and Instagram.

Hashtags can increase awareness, getting your content seen by more people than just followers and increase your social shares. Knowing how to use a hashtag is key to determining your success on social media. Here are seven innovative tips on how to use hashtags in social media marketing:

1. Keep it simple and relevant - make sure people are searching for it and that it's easy to remember

2. Make the most of trending hashtags - When you see a trend that relates to your business, engage in it by using the tag. Make sure that your post is going to add value to that hash tag before posting to ensure it gets maximum visibility.

3. Use hashtags across multiple social media channels - the more channels you use your hashtag on, the easier it is to remember.

4. Search the hashtag before you use it - it's wise to check to make sure your competitor isn't using the hashtag and you also need to make sure the hashtag isn't already being used for the wrong reasons.

5. Don't overuse hashtags - you should used a maximum of 2-3 hashtags per post. Contradictory to this post which is uses a lot of hashtags as an example, you do not want to give your followers the impression that you are spamming them.

6. Be specific and unique - generic hashtags won't be shared or re-tweeted. Think of a unique hashtag that people can engage with.

7. The key to a hashtag is the ability to develop loyalty to your brand with many popular and incredibly visible topics. This will drive new potential followers to your social media, and allow you to engage with them. When you use hashtag carefully, it helps you to expand your reach to targeted users, and improve customer interaction. The more comfortable your followers feel with your brand the more likely they will interact with you on social media.

Remember to ensure that your hashtags are short, conversational, and unique. Putting a hashtag in front of a keyword won't build your business' online presence on it's own.

Good luck and #happyhashtagging!
